I
often describe my work, which is full of energy, movement, and
color, as "contemporary impressionism." I do my best
to capture the feeling of natural light, and I usually use oil
paint because I love the viscosity, muscle, and texture of the
paint itself. I also love the movement of the strokes, which describe
the subject and hold the energy of the piece. My style has long
fluctuated between abstract and realist, sometimes combining both,
and sometimes just flirting on the edge of illusion and reality.
I have always been drawn to the twin poles of geometry and nature.
My fascination with geometry has led me to experiment in my painting
with intriguing geometric divisions which seem to question reality
and perception. And inspired by nature, I feel an intense desire
to preserve and explore the mysteries of the fragile, fleeting life
of flowers, foliage, trees and light. These two interests are also
evident in the main influences on my art: Paul Klee, the Impressionists,
and Asian art.
I actually came to the art world from the business world. In
my former life as a residential interior designer, I would often
envision the paintings and colors I wanted in a room but found that
these paintings just did not exist. So I started to paint and surprised
myself. Inspired, I enrolled in Boston's School of the Museum of
Fine Arts to further develop my skills, and discovered a wonderous
new world. After receiving my diploma, I went on to successfully
complete the post graduate fifth year. And perhaps because of my
earlier career in interior design, I still find many years later
that my main goal is to enhance a home with my work: to bring beauty
and joy to the beholder. My intention is to make art that you really
want to live with.
There are special moments for most artists when they become
lost in their work. When this happens for me, it is as though my
brush has a life of its own, and I simply dance with it, following
its lead. This brushwork is not only part of my energy, but reveals
my love for music, rhythm and movement.
